Movie Marathons

Although I am currently too busy to do anything else but study for the upcoming exam, whenever it’s my day off of studying, what we usually do at home is go on movie marathons. Whether it’s an old movie or not, we really don’t care as long as the movie is good.

For this week, the movies that we’ve seen so far are Casino Royale, Bolt, Inception, Salt, Ong Bak, and a whole DVD of Jackie Chan movies, which by the way is a lot of movies. Since my weekends are usually boring, we always find ways to make boring weekends into fun-filled afternoons, since we sleep in pretty much the entire morning. :P

If movie marathons don’t do it for us, BF gets both of his amps out, whips the mic out, logs onto youtube, hook up the laptop to one of the amps and the mic into the other and we start singing karaoke the improvised way. And in my opinion, the instrumentals on youtube are waaaay better than what you’re used to singing to in karaoke bars.

It’s just too bad though, after a few hours or a whole afternoon/evening of enjoyment, I still feel guilty about not studying hard enough when I know that I can actually do really good at the exam if I just prefer to be diligent enough about it. I guess I should give up movie marathons for the meantime…

At least until the exam’s over.

Inception at IMAX

Inception has been showing at the SM Cebu IMAX since July 15th, 2010, but it was only a few hours ago that my sister and I decided to watch it.  The theater price was PhP200 and since it has been a while since we watched a movie in a theater, my sister was reluctant about spending that much and would rather wait for the DVD copy of it from the streets (if you know what I mean).

We wanted to watch Step Up 3 in 3D but the theater price was PhP50 more than Inception’s theater price, so we decided to go ahead and watch Inception instead. It was my sister’s first time to get into the IMAX theater and she was like, “Wow…” when we took our seats. Just like my first time in IMAX, the theater was uber clean, no bad smells can be inhaled, it was as if the theater’s still doing its first show. :D

My IMAX Experience

It’s the very first IMAX theater in Cebu and I had the privilege of getting invited to watch a special screening of James Cameron’s Avatar. I’ve actually already watched the movie along with millions of movie goers out there when it got released sometime last year. I watched it in 3D, as well. The first time I saw the movie in 3D, I actually got disappointed, because my eyes ended up hurting. It was as if wearing eyeglasses that have grades that are too high for your own good. I’m pretty sure it can’t be the glasses. It must be the projection then.

Who knows? I’m not a 3D movie technician. When I watched it the first time, when IMAX hasn’t made it to Cebu yet, an American was sitting right behind us, and he kept taking his glasses on and off and as clear as daylight said, “I knew it was too good to be true.”. Nonetheless, they (he and his partner) finished the movie.

When I got the invite, I was happy, of course, it’s not everyday you get such an invite and I’m not sure I’d want to spend 400 pesos on a movie. People in the Philippines barely make that much everyday, and I’m jobless right now. :P

Mr. Allan Florendo, the Head of Marketing at SM City Cebu, gave a presentation about IMAX, regarding its history and also provided statistics about the ticket sales at SM Malls. When the movie started, the first thing that came to my mind was that the sound was at least more crisp that the first time I watched it, but the visuals were no better. I ended up taking the glasses off a number of times just to relieve my eyes.

I was also running a fever and since I only went to see what the hype was all about, I left the IMAX theater halfway through the movie to get some well-deserved rest.
