Geek Jam LAN Party in Cebu
This is one party that I would really really love to go to. Seriously. I’m a nerd and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Haha. So, what is a LAN party? Well, according to this little pamphlet that I got from the press conference with Gov, Gwen Garcia,
A LAN party is a gathering of PC Gaming and Network enthusiasts for the purpose of playing multiplayer PC and/or online games. It is also a meeting of PC, gadget and game console enthusiasts who are looking to play games, share files and computer and gadget know-how, as well as to show and display their “rigs”, which is the normal term for PCs that are modified and customized to the owner’s taste and specifications, much like in a car show, only with PCs, laptops and game consoles.
Now that we’ve established what a LAN party is all about, what is the purpose of having this party then? According to the same pamphlet, it is to gather as many as 500 participants to play a variety of games, share freeware and shareware files. This is also to showcase the participants’ modified or “modded” PCs and consoles. I would so love to see custom-built machines. It’s been too long already, man. A party such as this one can also inform the participants about the latest trends and cutting edge technology in PC products and services. Of course, the party would also encourage IT or Information Technology awareness. And having a party such as this one in Cebu would also put Cebu on the map being the first province to ever host such an event. And having that as an objective would showcase Cebu as the premiere destination for the IT industry in the Philippines.
The entrance fee is set at PhP50.00 for those who are coming to check out the rigs and machines, but for those who are bringing their babies with them will have to pay about PhP400.00. For those who are in the Internet cafe business, they can bring along 10 or more computers and have a discount for each computer. Those who won’t be bringing their computers can also rent the computers there for about PhP50.00 per hour. For those who would just like to bring their systems may do so and just rent 17-inch LCD monitors for PhP200.00. But if you buy a ticket to the event before August 10th, you’d only have to pay PhP350.00 per computer or PhP450.00 per computer plus the rental of the LCD monitor.
Those who would prefer to rent, may rent for PhP1,000 for the full 24 hours, if you don’t plan on staying that long, you can pass your remaining time to somebody else. Booths for a computer job fair and food and drinks will also be accommodated for a small fee. There will also be free WiFi at the area, and for PSP gamers, an access point will be open for you for free. Contests and promos await those who are willing to paritcipate.
If you are wondering why people have to pay, the payment will be used to pay for the networking and electricity bill that will come later on. With that many computers, I can only hope that the venue has enough surge protectors.
By the way, the party will be on August 23, 2008, that’s a Saturday at the CICC in Cebu. It should be from 8:00AM till 8:00AM of August 24th, Sunday. Those who will be bringing their rigs are encouraged to contact NGenius Ayala with telephone number (032)232-4546 for further details. Since this event is still about a month away, some terms and conditions may still change.
