Miss Wilhelmina

I have never had hash browns in my entire life before. I have only heard about them in the movies, TV shows and definitely not on Philippine television. I got up at five in the morning, which is so not like me. I have bad sleeping habits and that I really should just get some sleep whenever I need it, but I had to get up. Today was the day that I get this pre-employment medical examination done.

Time check: it was almost 7AM when I finished getting ready. Actually, it didn’t take me that long, I had some mail-checking and well, etc, etc, etc to do before I went and got ready for it. I got out of the door and walk to the nearest jeepney stop to the clinic. Since there wasn’t much traffic just yet, I didn’t have any problem getting there.

Yeah, no problem getting there at all. Ten minutes after standing in line for the registration, I realized that I still haven’t gotten my Medicard ok’ed yet. And I wasn’t about to start paying for all the tests. No way, man.

Time check: 7:14AM. The Medicard office opens at 8AM. So I walk around a little bit around Fuente, the big circle in the midtown Cebu, and since I was still pretty much hungry, I slipped into McDonald’s and ordered some pancakes, orange juice and one hash brown. The guy who took my order said, “How many are you having?” after I said just one. So I repeated what I said and they pretty much gave me just one. It was Php18.00.

Gawd, food is so expensive nowadays. It’s not right. Makes me think of those who actually don’t have anything to eat in a day. So I take my breakfast—my second breakfast, by the way. I had some noodles and eggs with some rice at home and a glass of milk.

In the US, people eat their pancakes with maple syrup, or at least that’s what they show on TV. But what McD’s had was honey. When I opened the sealed styro, a puff of smoke literally came out of it. I grabbed the honey from the other table and slathered some on top of the puffy cakes. I opened the butter container the girl over the counter handed along with the breakfast and put spread it over the pancakes too.

*Sigh* Seriously though, that was the best breakfast I’ve had in a long time. It’s been too long. Too long. After the yummy pancakes, I stared at the single hash brown that I ordered. The girl over the counter gave me some ketchup for it too. Ketchup with a hash brown. I wonder how it actually tastes.

I bit into it. A tiny bite. Yum. Tasted like chicken. Ketchup with it was even better. I got so stuck with the hash brown that I was afraid that if I ordered for more I’d render myself broke under payday. So I held back, finished the breakfast and got out of there as fast as possible.

Town was still empty, and what seemed like forever finishing breakfast actually just lasted a good 5 minutes. I eat fast. I found an Internet cafe where I stayed for an hour and fortunately, Robert was around.

Updating my groceries list now. Hash browns made my list.
